Working out a new piece

Sometimes the actual painting is the last thing that is done on a new piece. Right now I am trying to work out how and what to place on a 22" x 28" canvas. I had thought to do a painting of an Andalusian stallion, and started to sketch out the horse. I wanted it on a bit of an unconventional background, but am having trouble pulling it all together. I sketched this horse in a few different poses, and though it is a great idea, and the horse would present well in this pose, I don't see it filling the canvas in a balanced way.
As I was thinking about it, I sketched Meggie (my old Jack Russel terrier) asleep in her bed beside me where she can usually be found - when she's not out hunting mice in the field.
I'll keep working on the canvas though - its a size I have a frame for, so want to do something for the upcoming summer shows.
